The Alien Gambit: the Caro-Kann sacrifice and the traps that follow

The Alien Gambit is a sacrifice in the Caro-Kann Defence: 6.Nxf7!? gives a knight for a pawn to fork the queen and rook of Black. It is named after the streamer Witty_Alien (CM Volen Dyulgerov), who made it popular online. Against the natural 7…Bg4?? it wins material; against best defence it is a sound refutation of Black’s set-up.

The moves

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nf6 5.Ng5 h6 6.Nxf7 Kxf7 7.Nf3 Bf5 8.Ne5+ Kg8 9.Bc4+ e6 10.g4 Bh7 11.Bxe6#

6.Nxf7 Kxf7 is forced: the knight forks the queen on d8 and the rook on h8. After 7.Nf3 Black has a choice, and the line above is the one where a careless Black move (10…Bh7??) allows mate.

The sacrifice

The Caro-Kann is a solid defence: Black keeps a sound pawn structure and rarely loses material. The Alien Gambit goes against that solidity. After 5.Ng5 h6, White throws a knight at f7, the weakest square of the king at the start.

The point is the fork. 6.Nxf7 hits the queen on d8 and the rook on h8 at once. Black’s only good reply is the king capture, and then White has a knight, two pawns for the piece and a king that is out in the open.

Where the traps are

After 7.Nf3 Black has several moves. The course shows the three main ones. The greedy 7…Bg4?? runs into 8.Ne5+! and 9.Nxg4 (about +3.7 for White). The solid 7…c5! is the honest refutation: the engine rates it at about −2.0 for White. Between them sits 7…Bf5, where the trap is 10.g4! and the mate 11.Bxe6# if Black plays 10…Bh7??.

The lesson is the one every good gambit teaches: a sacrifice is only as good as the moves Black is able to find, so count the checks and the forks before you grab the material.
